Continuing Education Courses For Everyone

Author:  |  Category: School Academy

Submitted by: Edward Hulse

Education is one of, if not the most valuable attributes an individual can have. With education someone is able to solve problems, sell products, analyze data, and much more. There are many different types of continuing education available. There is industry specific continuing education. This type of education is usually required by the state and enforced by state legislature. Some common forms of continuing education are continuing legal education (for lawyers), insurance continuing education (for insurance agents), real estate continuing education (for realtors) and adjuster continuing education (for public and insurance adjusters). These are just a few of the regulated professions out there. Most of these professionals do their continuing education either online or in a classroom to meet their compliance deadline.

Another type of continuing education is for individuals who want to go back to school to enhance their resume, change career fields or move up in their current company. Formal education at a college or University is one of the most widely used resources for everyone. College classes used to be done on campus, but now with technology changing online courses for adults have taken a huge leap. They are now almost as popular as adults continuing their education in a classroom. Many students complete a bachelor s degree then work full-time for 15-20 years. They then find out they need higher education to continue to advance their career. This is where online education comes into play. Adults are able to balance their career, school, and their families at the same time. With the economy changing, other online students decide to go back to school for a complete career change. The healthcare industry for example has been booming. So a Master s in Healthcare Management has been a popular degree choice over the past five years.

Adults are not the only ones utilizing online courses. Many 18-25 year old students also pursue online education. Many feel online education is more flexible and easier to do. They also like the fact they are learning the same material whether in a classroom or online. This was a major issue some time ago. Employers perceived online education as a discounted degree and only hired graduates from a campus based institution. Times have definitely changed! Now, large Universities such as Penn State, Drexler, and even Harvard offer online classes and online degree programs. These larger accredited institutions have really helped change the perception of an online degree.

The most important thing to research is accreditation if you are looking to go back to school for a college degree. Regional accreditation is the highest accreditation in the United States according to the U.S. Department of Education. It is actually a higher accreditation than national accreditation. Regional accreditation allows students to transfer classes from one school to another, pursue higher education, or teach at a college or University level. Employers will also recognize your degree from an accredited school. This is usually the most important thing student s care about. You can always contact the institution and ask about their accredited.

One shop defies court order, one shop returns to work in Dublin Thomas Cook occupation

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Monday, August 3, 2009

Employees staging an occupation of the Thomas Cook travel agency & foreign exchange office in Grafton Street, Dublin, Ireland have voted to defy a High Court order and remain inside their office, in protest against a redundancy offer they say they “cannot live on” while they look for new jobs.

Employees of Thomas Cook subsidiary Direct Holidays in Talbot Street, meanwhile, will return to work tomorrow morning after a narrow majority voted to end their occupation.

According to Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) staff member Jon Clark, who is present in the Grafton street office and has now joined the occupation, speaking to Wikinews by telephone, about seventy-five per cent of the 44 Thomas Cook staff voted to keep the occupation going after a Dublin High Court judge set a 7pm deadline for them to vacate the premises. The occupiers now face criminal charges and have been informed that the Garda Síochána will arrive at 11am Tuesday morning to evict them.

Thomas Cook says the Grafton Street store has not been turning a profit for five years and is shutting down retail operations in the Republic of Ireland.

In response, the occupiers and members of TSSA staff present at the site have asked protesters and trade unionists to gather outside the store at 10:30am Tuesday morning and resist the police. A crowd that Clark estimates at 300 rallied today outside the Thomas Cook store in a bank holiday protest supporting the occupation.

TSSA staff in the occupation are now acting in defiance of the their union. TSSA general secretary Gerry Doherty told Dublin’s High Court that “my association will always obey the law of the land” during today’s hearing, and TSSA staff joining the occupation face possible disciplinary action from the union. Clark told Wikinews that the protesters fear official support from other unions being withdrawn and are attempting to establish a fund to which people can contribute money for the occupiers’ welfare. Money can currently be sent via the TSSA’s head office in London.

Dublin Lord Mayor and Labour Party member Emer Costello visited the occupation today, lending her support to the protesters. “I find it very disheartening that people have to go to those lengths to try and protect their jobs. It’s a very bad situation. I’m very disappointed that Thomas Cook feels it has to shut down its Irish operation”, the mayor told the Irish Times.

Mexican police official, bodyguard shot dead at restaurant

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Gunmen today opened fire in a Mexico City restaurant, killing a top police official in charge of monitoring the country’s illegal drug trade, as well as one of his bodyguards, Mexican officials said. The attack is the latest waged against authorities attempting to fight Mexico’s powerful drug cartels.

Security officials in Mexico City say the attack occurred as Igor Labastida Calderón, commander of the federal police‘s Traffic and Contraband division, was eating lunch with one of his bodyguards, Jose Maria Ochoa. According to Minerva Amado, spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, two unknown subjects got out of a black vehicle, entered the restaurant, and opened fire on Labastida Calderón.

Reports differ on who else was injured in the attack. Amado said two other bodyguards were injured and hospitalized, while Mexico City newspaper El Universal reports that three civilians were injured.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. No arrests have been made so far, as police continue to search for the assailants. Federal police have refused to comment.

President Felipe Calderón has sent over 20,000 troops throughout Mexico in an attempt to take back areas controlled by the country’s drug cartels. Since Calderón took office in December 2006, more than 4,000 people have been killed by these drug cartels, allegedly including federal police chief Édgar Millán Gómez, whose May death was attributed to the Sinaloa Cartel.

Banned film ‘The Profit’ appears on Web

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Copies of The Profit, a 2001 film blocked from distribution in the United States due to a court injunction won by the Church of Scientology, appeared on the Internet Friday on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on the video sharing site YouTube.

Directed by former film executive Peter N. Alexander, the movie has been characterized by critics as a parody of Scientology and of its founder L. Ron Hubbard. Alexander was a Scientologist for twenty years, and left the organization in 1997. The film was funded by Bob Minton, a former critic of Scientology who later signed an agreement with the Church of Scientology and has attempted to stop distribution of the film. Alexander has stated that the movie is based on his research into cults, and when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about parallels to Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard said: “I’ll let you draw that conclusion … I say it’s entirely fictional.”

The film was released in August 2001, and was shown at a movie theatre in Clearwater, Florida and at a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A Scientology spokesman gave a statement at the time saying “the movie is fiction and has nothing to do with Scientology”. The Church of Scientology later took legal action in an attempt to stop further distribution of the film. The Church of Scientology claimed that the film was intended to influence the jury pool in the wrongful death case of Scientologist Lisa McPherson, who died under Scientology care in Clearwater, Florida.

In April 2002, a Pinellas County, Florida judge issued a court order enjoining The Profit from worldwide distribution for an indefinite period. According to the original court injunction received by Wikinews, the movie was originally banned because the court found that it could be seen as a parody of Scientology. In his April 20, 2002 ruling on the injunction, Judge Robert E. Beach of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County, Florida wrote: “…an average person viewing the film entitled The Profit could perceive that it is a parody of the Church of Scientology”.

“To the extent that any person considered as a potential juror in evaluating any issues involving the Church of Scientology, the process of voir dire provides a fair and complete remedy to eliminate any potential juror that may possibly have been influenced to be less than fair and impartial,” added Beach.

Luke Lirot, the attorney for the film’s production company, announced on the film’s website on April 7, 2007 that “We have absolutely no exposure for any repercussions from the court order,” but that the film was still blocked from distribution due to an ongoing legal battle. Lirot wrote: “all that’s stopping the release of the movie is the legal battle with the partner who was compromised by Scientology (Robert Minton) and is currently using his power as partner to stop the release of the film.”

In an October 2007 article, The Times described the film as “banned in the US because of a lawsuit taken out against it by The Church of Scientology,” and Russ Kick’s The Disinformation Book of Lists included the film in his “List of 16 Movies Banned in the U.S.”. An 8-minute teaser segment from The Profit appeared on the film’s website and on the video sharing site YouTube in February 2008, and an attorney representing Bob Minton sent a letter to Luke Lirot requesting that the film clip be taken down. In a response letter, Lirot wrote that “Rather than damage any asset of the LLC, the short clip merely keeps the film in the public eye, and in a positive way.”

On Friday, copies of the film began to circulate on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on YouTube. A link related to the film’s appearance on the Internet on the community-based link aggregator website Digg.com had 3,638 “Diggs” – and hit the front page of the site’s Entertainment section on Saturday.

I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there.

On Saturday, Scientology critic and Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker put a streaming version of the film on his website, www.xenutv.com, and encouraged others to watch and discuss the film on a real-time chat channel. In a video posting to YouTube Saturday, Bunker said “I did not do it. I had nothing to do with it … I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there … people are finally having a chance to see it. A lot of people have been curious over the years and there’s been a lot of interest in seeing the film, so finally you can.”

We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.

On the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, a poster by the username “Alexia Death” commented on the film’s appearance on the Internet in the context of censorship: “It is out! And so it is a WIN if many people review it even if they say it SUCKS! … Being bad is no cause to allow censorship … And being censored is no cause to assume its good”. A post to the blog Blogsreel commented: “We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.”

In a post on Sunday to the message board attached to the official website for the film, attorney Luke Lirot asked that individuals stop distributing copies of The Profit over the Internet. Lirot wrote: “It has been brought to my attention that several unauthorized transmissions and downloads of this protected work have taken place over the last 72 hours. Such actions are copyright violations and are unlawful. I request that any further distribution and/or dissemination of this important work cease immediately and any copies of the work that have been downloaded please be deleted.” In his statement, Lirot recognized the rights of individuals under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, but also said that unauthorized distribution of the film “will only serve to harm the goal of vast distribution”.

Blog postings have attributed the film’s appearance on the Internet as part of the anti-Scientology movement Project Chanology organized by the Internet-based group Anonymous, but this has not been confirmed. Wikinews previously reported on international protests against Scientology which took place as part of Project Chanology on February 10 and March 15. A third international protest by Anonymous is scheduled for April 12. Titled “Operation Reconnect”, the third international protest will focus on highlighting Scientology’s practice of disconnection.

2008 Taipei International Book Exhibition: Varied features at Kid Book Hall

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, February 15, 2008

Following the first day’s events at the 2008 Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE), organisers used today as an opportunity for a number of autograph sessions, the announcement of awards and a focus on the Taipei World Trade Center‘s Hall 3 where children’s activities and seminars were being held.

The Kids’ Book Hall, which was created with cooperation from the Regional Association of Educational Materials, saw a new addition this year in the form of the “Taiwan Stationery” pavilion. The display included a variety of paper products not only for children, but for small-business and general usage.

In order to promote some conceptions on environment and recycling, Yuen Foong Yu Paper Mfg. Co. Ltd. sponsored the exhibition with recycled poster container and corrugated-fiberboard, which was used to design several nature scenes, and the material will be reusable in the future.

Participants also held several seminars at TWTC Hall 1 for reading population promotion, for example, a Taiwanese version of a famous magazine named “Kagakuru”. Aimed at science education, imported by Taiwan Mac Education, and promoted by several academic professionals in Taiwan, the magazine will be released on March 3, 2008.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of “Masterpiece Theatre,” was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecuters.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Non-profit ACORN plans to shut down

The US community organizing group Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) will end its operations due to dwindling funds. The group said in a statement that it would close most of its field offices by April 1.

The heads of the organization said in a joint statement that “ACORN’s members have a great deal to be proud of—from promoting homeownership to helping rebuild New Orleans, from raising wages to winning safer streets, from training community leaders to promoting voter participation—ACORN members have worked hard to create stronger communities, a more inclusive democracy, and a more just nation.”

The group, founded in 1970, played a prominent role in the 2008 US presidential elections, as it conducted many voter registration drives and fundraising for then-Senator Barack Obama, among other Democratic candidates. The organization first became scrutinized during the 2006 mid-term elections, when some of its employees were accused of voter fraud. Matters got worse in 2009 after an undercover video revealed two of its employees giving advice on how to set up a prostitution ring and commit tax fraud.

What To Do When You Want To Buy And Sell Jewelry

Author:  |  Category: Music

byAlma Abell

There are many different methods that you can use to buy used pieces of jewelry. However, if you’re looking to sell either broken or unwanted jewelry, and you want to get the best price possible, there are a few things that you need to consider.

There are many places that you can sell your unwanted or broken jewelry to from online gold buyers to pawn shops and jewelry stores. However, there are some things that you need to do ahead of time to ensure that you’re dealing with a reputable jewelry buyer that you can get an equitable price when when you decide to buy and sell jewelry.

The first thing you want to do is your homework. You can find various jewelry testers online that will allow you to determine what type of precious metal your jewelry is made from. You can also purchase a set of scales to help weigh the jewelry. This is going to be beneficial because knowing how much precious metal exists in the jewelry that you’re looking to sell can help you to determine a ballpark figure when it comes to the value of jewelry.

If you’re only selling one or perhaps two pieces of jewelry, this sort of homework may not be necessary. However, if you’re selling a large quantity of jewelry, it may be worth the investment of money and time.

If you’re only selling a few select pieces of jewelry, you may want to consider having the jewelry professionally appraised. It’s also a good idea to look for an appraisal independent of the business that you’re considering selling your jewelry to. Having the same purchaser do the appraisal can be a major conflict of interest and you’ll never quite know if you’re getting an accurate appraisal for the jewelry that you’re looking to sell.

There are many other things to consider when you want to buy and sell jewelry, however, following these simple tips will help you ahead of time to know an estimate of what the jewelry is worth. This will better equip you when you visit a jewelry store, a gold buyer or a pawn shop with a soul purpose of selling unwanted or broken pieces of jewelry.
