Turner Broadcasting apologizes for Boston scare

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, February 2, 2007

An advertising campaign for shows on Adult Swim, a programming block on Cartoon Network, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, gave local and federal law-enforcement a scare when devices were discovered on eight different bridges and roads.

The U.S. city of Boston was snarled in traffic jams January 31 as police investigated devices with flashing lights representing a cartoon character were placed around bridges and other areas throughout the city.

Different governmental agencies were brought in to help deal with the problem, which was later found to be no threat, as described by Boston Police Department spokesperson Eddy Chrispin. A bomb squad was deployed under supervision of the FBI, Boston police, the US Coast Guard, and different federal agencies.

The advertising campaign, for the widely popular program Aqua Teen Hunger Force, featuring characters from that series, was in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many other major US cities.

Two people have been arrested for alleged participation in this incident.

Turner Broadcasting Systems hired New York marketing firm Interference Inc. which in turn hired individuals in the various cities to place the devices promoting the cartoon’s fifth season, scheduled for a February 23 premiere. Road and rail traffic was disrupted by police as they investigated and removed the devices.

The mostly flat devices resemble two-foot-square Lite-Brites with batteries attached to the bottom and visible wires.

G4TV has dubbed the incident “Aquagate” on its broadcast of Attack of the Show segment The Feed.

It is not known why the devices took police several weeks to notice, nor why the devices were believed to be dangerous.

Torcana Newsletter Issue 24 – Important USA Property News & Mosaic Orlando Update

by

Colin Murphy (Torcana)

To your right you ll find our main deal of the week – Mosaic at Mall of Millenia in Orlando (pictured above). Yields are very high (10%) and occupancy is almost 100%. Best of all, it s extremely beautiful and prices start at 45,500 ($60,900).

Volcano Chaos

It s been a rather topsy turvey week, with all manner of travel chaos caused by this Icelandic Volcano. We ve had people getting buses from Berlin to London and many more trying to get into and out of Florida. The best jokes for those seeking relief from the travel boredom included:

a. It was the last wish of the Icelandic economy that its ashes be spread over Europe

b. It s too soon to make jokes about the Icelandic volcano – we should at least wait until the dust settles.

Thankfully, things are rather more settled stateside and there is an abundance of positive economic and property news in the USA for those who care to look. The most striking trends and chances I have noticed included:

Pending Homes Sales: This is often considered a leading indicator of the direction an economy is moving. In February, the number of homes in the US that are under contract rose by 8.2%. This index is also a significant 17.3% higher than it was a year ago.

Housing Affordability: This is a hugely important statistic as improved affordability helps the economic recovery by enabling more families (especially first time buyers) to purchase homes.

Back in 2007, the average house cost $217,900, the average mortgage interest rate was 6.52% and the average family income was $61,173. In February 2010, the average house cost $164,300, the average mortgage interest rate was 4.99% and the average family income was $60,498.

Some difference eh? That means a housing payment is just 14% of a regular families income, way below the 25% most experts recommend for a stable family budget.

This affordability is one of the key reasons Torcana focus on communities where locals, as opposed to tourists buy and rent. Mosaic (below) is a prime example.

Financing: A low affordability index is only useful if there is financing available to match it. The government funded home buyer tax creditshas been a major help with 128,500 people in Florida alone claiming almost a billion dollars in tax credits.

Vacancy Rates: Over the past two years vacancy rates have been rising and rental rates have been falling across the USA – no surprise with an unprecedented housing and economic bust. However, latest figures from Reuters suggest that vacancy rates have stopped risingand rental rates have started increasingin the first quarter of 2010. The number of apartments rented after a discounted house was vacated surged by over 20,000 units in the first quarter – the highest net positive jump in 10 years.

National vacancy rates now stand at 8%, but there are plenty of developments that are far lower. Our Mosaic community has 450 units – 99% of which are occupied. As you can probably imagine; it s extremely hard to find

investment properties

like that.

Mosaic At Millenia Update

Hundreds of you have now enquired about this and all should have received the full brochure, information pack, financial details and site plan. Hopefully you have had the time to review and study the very detailed information provided.

Our sales team (including Florida expert David Shaw) have been onsite over the past few weeks and are amazed at the level of sales activity from not only our own clients but from other international and local realtors. Over 100 condos have been sold to owner occupiers and investors since the launch 5 weeks ago.

The reason? Desirable location; competitive pricing, great build quality, spacious floor plans, impeccable presentation on the community and an occupancy rate of 99%. All the essential boxes are ticked and then some.

If you ve got some spare time on your hands, we d encourage you to come over and have a look. The strategy of “waiting for the market to bottom out” doesn t really apply anymore in locations like this. The demand for quality distressed assets in Florida, as illustrated by the stats above, is huge.

A community like Mosaic is rare. The available units, and especially the south and west facing ones with high yields, are being snapped up fast.

Below you ll find a short investment summary with a link to more information on the website. As always, a full aftersales service and hassle free purchase process is available for all Torcana clients.

London Tube bombs went ‘bang bang bang, very close together’

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, July 9, 2005

After a press conference in London from the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London, more details are emerging about the attacks in London on Thursday.

Data from the Underground system’s power and control systems have revealed that all three bombs went off within 50 seconds of each other, at 8.50am, with the managing director of Transport for London, Tim O’Toole saying the bombs went “bang bang bang, very close together”.

The first bomb to detonate was on the Liverpool Street train soon after it left for Aldgate on the Circle line, seconds before the others. The blast tripped out the power system, visible in the control room. The first call the police received that morning reported “a bang” at Aldgate East, coming within a minute of the blast.

The Edgware Road train, leaving for Paddington and also on the Circle, exploded opposite a train coming from the other direction, making people think at first that it was a derailment. The first call to the Police spoke not of an explosion, but of a person falling under the wheels of the train. The confirmation of a bomb did not come until 9.17am, but by that time the emergency services were already on scene.

Transport for London’s new TrackerNet software is fully opertational on the Circle line, which allows for precise tracking of trains, but is not yet fully installed on the Piccadilly line. The first indication of the Piccadilly line bomb was when the tunnel telephone system wires were cut by the blast, an event logged by other software. The cutting of the lines then tripped out the track current. The tunnel itself suffered only slight damage and is safe, but the train – which was packed with commuters heading for Russell Square – is very badly damaged.

London Underground declared a ‘code Amber’ within minutes, moving trains to platforms and opening all doors. A ‘code Red’ – full evacuation – was set at around 9.15am. O’Toole described the decision to evacuate as being “very grave, not taken lightly”. When questioned as to whether everything possible had been done on the day to save lives, the managing director of Transport for London was “very proud” of the choices made that morning.

As investigations continue, all bodies have been removed from the sub-surface Circle line trains, but the carriages themselves are still in situ while a painstaking forensic investigation takes place.

Currently, work is on-going to retrieve bodies and forensic evidence from the carriage of the train in the deep tunnel of the Piccadilly line near King’s Cross. Teams of rescue workers looking for human remains are working alongside forensics experts in a “meticulous” search to find evidence.

Conditions are described as being very difficult, with high temperatures and lots of dust. Work was halted over Friday night when conditions became too bad, and resumed this morning. Efforts have been made to improve the ventilation.

Work will continue throughout tonight and possibly into Sunday. The exact number of bodies still in the wrecked carriage is unknown.

Access from King’s Cross is impossible, so workers are taking the longer route from Russell Square station to get to the front of the train.

Police have revealed that the bombs were ‘high explosives’ – not homemade. However they are declining to be specific about their composition as the information could be useful when they interrogate suspects.

Police will not confirm or deny if any parts of a timer have been found, but have said that “any device will now be in a million pieces”. Police believe the use of timers more likely than suicide bombings as the blasts were so closely timed, but are not ruling out anything.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Australian Senator arrives at Parliament dressed as a beer bottle

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Family First Senator Steve Fielding arrived at Parliament today, dressed as a beer bottle to raise awareness of a bill he intends to move in the Senate today. Senator Fielding will introduce a bill to establish a nationwide refund scheme for bottles and cans.

A similar scheme has operated in South Australia since 1977.

Family First wants a rebate of 10 cents per container, while the Australian Greens want 20 cents.

Speaking to reporters outside parliament dressed as a beer bottle, the Senator said the legislation would reduce litter by 25 per cent. “There’s a message in this bottle.”

“I am no longer trash, I’m cash.”

“We should get the litter off the streets and off the creeks and into recycling – that’s good for the environment and good for the community”

“It’s a win-win and I can’t understand why nationally we don’t have a scheme,” said Senator Fielding.

Senator Fielding said that recycling not only reduced litter, but also consumes less energy than making new containers from scratch. “Recycling a plastic bottle saves more than 80 per cent of the energy used to make a bottle from scratch and recycling aluminium cans uses just five per cent of the energy used making a can from scratch,” said the Senator.

Senator Bob Brown, leader of the Greens said while there were environmental benefits from recycling, it would also create thousands of new jobs.

“This is a very good way of recycling and reducing energy because a lot of energy goes into making cans and bottles,” Senator Brown told reporters.

“It will employ tens of thousands of people across Australia.”

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, April 7, 2006Legislators in the Massachusetts General Court, their name for the state legislature, approved legislation on Tuesday, April 4, that would make it the first state in the United States to require all residents to have health insurance and impose penalties for non-compliance. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican who is expected to run for U.S. President in 2008, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill passed the lower house, the Massachusetts House of Representatives by a vote of 155-2, and unanimously by the state senate. The Democratic Party holds supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

Among the bill’s provisions are these:

 1. Businesses that employ more than 10 people are required to provide health insurance for all staff or face fines of $295 per year per uninsured worker.
 2. Individuals will be required to enroll in a health plan by July 1, 2007, or face tax penalties.
 3. Health insurers will provide partially to fully subsidized coverage for low-income residents.

At least one other state (Hawaii) requires employers to provide employee health insurance, but no other state holds individuals accountable for coverage.

Two Canadian Liberal leadership candidates have not donated to party

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

A Wikinews analysis of financial reports filed with Elections Canada shows that two of the candidates for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada have not made any financial donations to the party, its riding associations, or election candidates in 2005 or 2006. Neither Michael Ignatieff nor Gerard Kennedy are recorded as having made finanical contributions.

Ironically, Ignatieff was the recipient of a donation from one fellow leadership candidate, Martha Hall Findlay, who donated $230.58 to his successful effort to be elected to the House of Commons in the January 23, 2006 federal elections.

Bob Rae, a former leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party donated a total of $845 to the Liberals since the beginning of 2005 including $300 to MP John Godfrey‘s election campaign and $300 to Pierre Pettigrew‘s riding association in Papineau. He also donated money to NDP candidates in the January election including $300 to Irene Mathyssen, who was a cabinet minister under Rae in the 1990s, and $250 to his former special assistant, Rochelle Carnegie, the NDP’s candidate in Willowdale. Carnegie’s Liberal rival was Jim Peterson, brother of former Ontario premier David Peterson whose government Rae defeated in 1990.

Scott Brison is the most generous Liberal having donated a total of $3175 to the party, its candidates and riding associations, followed by Ken Dryden who donated $2145, Joe Volpe who has donated $1695, Hedy Fry with $1323.49, Hall Findlay with $1290.85, Rae’s $845 and Stephane Dion with $595.

Totals do not include donations made by the candidates to their own leadership campaigns. Wikinews examined financial reports for donations to political parties, riding associations and federal election candidates made in 2005 and 2006.

Naomi Campbell testifies against former Liberian president

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Supermodel Naomi Campbell testified for prosecutors on Thursday in a war crimes case against former Liberian president Charles Taylor.

Taylor allegedly gave an uncut blood diamond to Campbell in 1997 when they met for dinner in South Africa, according to Professor David Crane of Syracuse University.

Crane told Voice of America, “The testimony itself is important because the prosecution wants to show that Charles Taylor has the mindset or what we call the mens rea to use the blood diamonds that were mined by Sierra Leoneans chained to pits in the Kailahun and Kenema area. And, he was using them for various reasons: to buy guns, to use cash to deposit, and also to buy influence.”

Taylor denies he possessed any uncut diamonds.

Campbell said in her testimony, “When I was sleeping I had a knock on my door. I opened my door and two men were there and gave me a pouch and said, ‘A gift for you.'” She said the men gave her “very small, dirty looking stones.”

She continued, “At breakfast I told Miss [Mia] Farrow and Miss [Carole] White what had happened and one of the two said, well that’s obviously Charles Taylor, and I said, yes I guess it was.”

Campbell was not sure Taylor sent her the blood diamonds and she claimed she assumed it was the accused and continued stating it was unlikely anyone else gave her the gift.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, The Netherlands ruled that no one may sketch, take photographs, or make videos of Campbell, due to her high profile. Photographers were barred from taking photos of Campbell entering or leaving the courthouse, but her testimony was recorded as usual.

5 Top Insider Trading Tips Used By Your Gold Fund Manager

by

JacquelineBrewster

On an international level, gold is mostly traded over-the-counter, not through exchanges. This is done through forward contracts, which are non-standardized agreements to trade gold in the future at a price agreed today, currently known as futures. London is the largest global centre for such transactions.

The forward market for gold is less driven by supply and demand than other commodity markets. Instead, spot (immediate) prices and interest rate differentials run the market, like in the case of currency. Typically, the gold market is in contagno, which means that the forward (contractually agreed) price of gold is higher than the spot price(quoted for immediate payments and deliveries). This makes gold market attractive for gold producers making forward sales. Also there is a notable derivatives market for gold, both for speculating and for hedging (insurance) purposes. Gold accounts can be allocated and unallocated. Unallocated accounts represent over 14% of the pool at the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). There is little information concerning the backing of unallocated gold, but LBMA unallocated accounts are believed to be backed up by physical gold only in part. So, in case of a sudden large demand for physical gold, the LBMA would react similarly to a bank in shortage of liquidities, with the unallocated accounts being at risk of loss. Your expectancies from gold should be similar to those you would have from stable currency. With paper money, few people simply store savings, but manage their possessions in forms that allow for capital increase. Some prefer extra gains over short periods of time, while others trust more in a slow but steady increase. Nevertheless, we all have tips for investing our money wisely. The same general idea should apply when investing in gold. Avoid collecting physically allocated gold if you need insurance. Directly owned bullion coins and bars are more appropriate for short time speculative type investments. And remember that gold exchange-traded products: EFT’s, CEF’s and ETN’s, come with significant counter party risks. Some of these are based on unallocated accounts, a situation involving supplementary risks you will have to take. Investing in mining shares is an accessible method of trading gold but it is hardly for beginners and also not very suitable for long term purposes because of specific risks. Mining shares prices fluctuate on the stock market, while gold price fluctuates at a different pace. The risk is that of situations where shares depreciate while gold appreciates. If you purchase through mutual funds, the risk of faulty management may lower but the counter party risks will add up. If you are seeking long term insurance, invest in gold funds. Gold funds are a form of investment with minimal risks, just like possessing physical gold, but with a steady return of investments. The greater part of their investment consists of physically allocated gold which is stored in secure vaults of banks. Gold funds have a limited number of qualified investors. More customizable than mutual funds, they allow for a large number of financial operations to be performed and are capable to ensure positive ROI, less related to overall market performance.

The

Hinde Capitalgold funds

offer investors the opportunity to seek the preservation of capital in gold, against the potential erosion of the purchasing power of fiat paper money.
