The SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket has failed to place a DARPA demonstration payload into orbit, on its first flight into space. The rocket launched from Omelek Island, at 01:10 GMT on 21 March, just less than a year after its maiden flight which failed just seconds after launch.

The rocket, which is the first privately-funded liquid-fueled launch vehicle, was intended to place the payload into a low-Earth orbit, but all contact with the rocket was lost just over five minutes into the flight.

The first stage burn proceeded nominally, and separation occurred on schedule. As the first stage fell away from the second, it was observed to have impacted on the engine bell of the second stage. About five minutes into the flight, the second stage began to roll out of control. All data was lost at T+5 minutes, 5 seconds.

Armed police shoot man dead on London Underground

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, July 22, 2005

London Metropolitan Police have confirmed that armed police officers shot and killed a man at Stockwell Underground station just after 10 a.m. BST this morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sir Ian Blair, the Commissioner of London Metropolitan, told a press conference this afternoon that the man was challenged by police officers (not in uniform) but refused to follow instructions. Some witnesses claim he did not appear to be carrying any arms, but wore a heavy coat that may have concealed a weapon. One passenger, Anthony Larkin, said the man appeared to be wearing a “bomb belt”.

Mark Whitby, apparently the closest eye witness said; “He half-tripped, was half-pushed to the floor. The policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand, he held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him.”

Police have revealed that the shooting was connected with yesterday’s attempted attacks, but but have not confirmed him to be one of the four bombing suspects. Police sources have indicated that the man who was shot had been followed covertly, and after he was confronted he ran off and was followed on foot by up to twenty police from street level into the Underground station.

London Underground suspended some services on the Victoria and Northern lines, citing a request by the police. The Northern line was then completely suspended for a short time mid-afternoon after a security alert at Mornington Crescent Station.

The London Ambulance Service have dispatched ambulances and the air ambulance to the scene. The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off a 200 metre perimeter around the station.

Blizzard Entertainment’s victory over bnetd sealed in Appeals Court

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, September 3, 2005

Blizzard Entertainment has won a federal ruling in the U.S. Court of Appeals against the programmers of bnetd, a software package that emulates Blizzard’s Battle.net service. The court reaffirmed the original judgement, given in October, that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and click-through EULA’s prohibited the reverse engineering of Blizzard’s software in order to improve their playability. This was the first real test of the DMCA’s applicability.

Bnetd, released under the GNU General Public License, was created to enable users to play multiplayer games, bypassing Blizzard’s freely accessible Battle.net servers, which have sometimes been unreliable or slow for gamers. The software also disabled the CD-Key check which is present in Battle.net to prevent users of pirated copies from being able to connect to Blizzard’s servers. Offers by bnetd developers to incorporate Blizzard’s CD-Check system were declined.

The CD-Check system itself has faced controversy, with some users complaining it borders on breaching privacy in the same way as adware and other malevolent software. This is not confined to Blizzard: controversy occurred when Sony Online Entertainment’s EverQuest had a similar system which was later disabled due to complaints. Other games designed for network play are also known to have similar systems in place, the most prominent perhaps being Valve Software’s Steam system developed for Half-Life 2.

Blizzard has produced many popular titles such as Starcraft, World of Warcraft and the Diablo series.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Peanut Butter Fudge: A Mixture Of Sweet History

Author:  |  Category: Kitchen Designer

By Danny Fox

If you are a peanut butter lover, chances are you will love peanut butter fudge even more. Just imagine the rich and creamy taste that will fill your palate with every bite of this heavenly food. Peanut butter fudge is every sweet tooth’s dream come true. It gives your mouth a wonderful mixture of tastes that will surely satiate your buds. But how is peanut butter fudge made? And who was the genius who first made this delectable recipe?

Stories date back to more than a hundred years ago. In the 1800s, the word fudge meant a ‘cheat’ or ‘hoax.’ Some people even used it as an exclamation, saying “Oh, fudge!” whenever they were tempted to cuss. The word fudge was actually used for the first time to pertain to food when a batch of caramels did not turn out quite right. Rumor has it that that batch of caramel was ‘fudged,’ thus, creating the food type that we now know as fudge. Another interesting tale is that American college women prepared concoctions that were later on called fudge as an excuse to stay up late. ‘Fudge’ in lieu of ‘hoax’ was used by these students to refer to their late-night activities.

Fudge is a type of confectionery made by mixing sugar, butter, and milk with a preferred flavor like chocolate, vanilla, or maple. Boiling these ingredients produce a toffee-like sweet concoction that has a flavor so divine it was alternatively called divinity fudge. Fudge is commonly identified with chocolate. Early recipes in America mostly showed that fudge was made with chocolate mixture. It has been said that recipes are not just ‘invented,’ they evolve. Evidence of this is shown in copies of chocolate caramel formulas that date back to the 1880s. Early recipes of fudge are quite similar to chocolate caramel mixtures. It has never been exactly clear when peanut butter fudge was first created. It is believed to have come from experiments with peanut butter. Brilliant innovations in the kitchen produced the peanut butter fudge that many people love today.

Peanut butter fudge is actually quite easy to make. You’ll just need peanut butter, milk, butter, sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt. There are variations in making peanut butter fudge, though, because people have different preferences. Some peanut butter lovers like their peanut butter fudge sweet while others like their fudge semi sweet. Another differentiation is the ‘gooeyness’ of the mixture. Most people prefer their peanut butter fudges extra sticky while others like a more solid feel to their fudge. Whatever the preference, every bite into a peanut butter fudge is an experience unique to each and every type of peanut butter and fudge lover.

What makes the experience even more unique is the colorful history that has brought fudge on to our tables. There is hardly any North American kid that has not had the welcome joy of chewing a peanut butter fudge. This delightful concoction has woven its way from college women’s testing tables to the warmth of our homes.

To get the best peanut butter fudges, check out Tanner’s Pecans and Candies. It’s the top choice for desserts and sweets.

Australian House of Representatives grows heated over industrial relations legislation

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, November 3, 2005

Australian industral relations reform legislationmade up of 700 pages of bill legislation and 500 additional pages of explanatory memoranda was introduced into the Federal House of Representatives November 2, where the Opposition heatedly attempted to address their perceived problem of the Government’s lack of discussion and debate over the matter.

The first reading of the bill was the first order of the day, and when Kevin Andrews tried to do so, Opposition member Stephen Smith, responsible for workplace relations, immediately moved a motion deferring the bills to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Workplace Relations and Workforce Participation. The Leader of the House, Tony Abbott moved that Smith and the necessary supporter — viz., Julia Gillard — be not further heard (cloture). The Government’s majority in the House ensured that this would happen. However, Opposition members attempted to use House standing orders necessitating that copies of the bill to be “available to Members”, with argument arising whether “available to Members” meant all members or simply whether some copies should be available; this ended up in a dissent motion moved against the Speaker of the House.

Later, in a heated Question Time, where six members of the Opposition, (Kelly Hoare, Julia Irwin, Anthony Albanese, Bernard Ripoll, Catherine King, and Gavan O’Connor), were removed from the Chamber during Question Time under standing orders for disruption — Jill Hall quipped that she was “glad to be still here to ask [her] question” — nearly all questions to the Government put by the Opposition, the subsequent time for matters of public importance, and some members in the adjournment debate, was all on the topic of the industrial relations reform.

To implement and fund the legislation, the government will “spend an additional $486million on industrial relations changes over four years, or $121million a year. This spending would be in addition to the present annual budget of $86million.” said an unnamed government source for The Australian.

The government will need to use its corporation powers to remove the powers from the states to alter the award conditions and other employee employer related conditions. But the New South Wales premier Morris Iemma has received legal advice that the legislation maybe unconstitutional, the reason being its being used to end the role of the states and territories Australian States in the industrial relations system. “It is our view that the Commonwealth is misusing this law to achieve exactly what it was designed to prevent”, Iemma said. Mr Iemma will be challenging the changes in the high court with Peter Beattie Premier of Queensland supporting his challenge in the High Court.

Federally-funded abstinence programs fraught with problems: Report

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, December 2, 2004

WASHINGTON, DC — According to a report issued by U.S. House of Representatives Congressman Henry A. Waxman (DCA), the majority of abstinence-only sexual education programs in schools contain incorrect or misleading information.

The report found that over 80% of the curricula used by the recipients of the grants contained incorrect information, including the claim that condoms did not prevent the spread of STDs and that abortions have a high chance of causing sterility.[1]

These programs are funded by the federal government under President George W. Bush’s faith-based initiative. According to the report, these abstinence programs—promoted by the administration of President Bush—are receiving increasing amounts of funding: nearly $170 million will be spent in 2005, which is more than double the spending on these programs in 2001.[2]

Under the faith-based initiative programs, the United States government allocates funds to religious and other community organizations that agree to carry out abstinence education programs which do not include coverage of any other methods of birth control or sexually transmitted disease prevention, as well as other criteria.

The timing of the report is significant in that it comes on the heels of research from Columbia University that found that nearly 9 of 10 teenagers who had pledged abstinence from pre-marital sex had broken their vows in the first six years since the pledges[3].

The Waxman Report and the Columbia University study describe some abstinence programs as factually wrong and/or ineffective. In a rebuttal, Dr. Alma L. Golden, a deputy assistant secretary in the Health and Human Services Department, said in a statement that Mr. Waxman’s report “misses the boat” and that it took information out of context “for purely political reasons.”[4]

Motivation: How To Motivate Your Teenager

Author:  |  Category: Online Gambling

By Rick Butts

How do I motivate my teenager?

Q: Rick, my son is 15 and seems to have no direction or goals except to NOT do anything. I read motivational books and listen to audios – but he won’t read it anything I give him.

A: Is there a parent alive who hasn’t been frustrated with the apathy and and rebellious nature of their teenager?

This subject has filled a great number of books – and is bigger than the scope of this article, but I can share some helpful ideas.

First of all, I still contend that it is generally not possible to motivate another person. What often appears as external motivation is really intimidation, which parents do have the right to use judiciously.

But you can help them to motivate themselves.

So how to do you provide crafty youth with these opportunities – especially when they seem instinctively resistant to doing exactly the opposite of what we ask them?

When I dared to go shopping with my teenage daughter, the mere suggestion that I thought an item of clothing for her magically turned it into a burlap sack – it was a sure fire way to keep her from buying something.

I was much better off to walk the store with the maximum amount of disinterest as possible, and simply be there to produce the credit card at the check out moment – then disappear again until needed!

Teenagers ARE motivated by many things, watch and pay attention to what is important to them in this tumultuous time of transition and search for identity.

With this in mind here are a few suggestions on how to help your teenager motivate themselves toward positive goals.

1. “Train Up A Child In The Way In Which He/She Should Go – and in the End They Will Not Depart From It.”

This is one of the most mis-translated verses in Hebrew scripture.

Most will tell you that it means to teach your kids right from wrong (read: your world view) and then even if they go berserk for a while, they will mature and return to what you taught them later in life.

While there is much value in this approach, that is not what this one means.

In the original Hebrew it reads, ‘Follow the tree in the direction the branch is bent.’

Meaning: Provide an education and freedom in the direction of their unique gifts and skills and they won’t waste time pursuing the wrong direction in work and life – and they won’t have to do a dramatic course correction in life after you’ve paid for all that college – and do what they tried to tell you they wanted to before you forced them into being a lawyer, if you are a lawyer.

Now I’ve stated that a bit strong, but you get the point.

There are tests and evaluation tools that can aid you in this.

Don’t ignore your own eyes, or the eyes of your spouse, friends, coaches, and teachers for often they can see that to which we are blind.

It’s your job to sort out the desire your teenager has to play video games 24/7 and their ability to solve problems or adventure.

And hey, this is an important principle for motivation for all human beings. Parents are just as motivated by pursuing our unique skills and passions as teenagers.

2. Continue to dialogue even if you think they aren’t listening.

Research shows that the single most important influence as to whether a teenager or adolescent chooses to get involved in using drugs is the opinion of their parents.

While this is not always the case – Mom spouting platitudes about how bad drugs are while she swizzles a glass of whiskey in her hand isn’t likely to have much power. Do as I say, not as I do has long ago proven to be a worthless parenting model.

If you get drunk or are a drunk (I could go on here for days), then don’t be so surprised if your kids act out in their own way.

So, stay ‘on message’ with kids, but be congruent and consistent and you’ll win the silent respect of your kids. (They will not tell you this until many years later – but know that it it true.)

3. The amazing Motivational Car Ride

An audience member gave me this one. Now I use this idea whenever someone is standing at my autograph table after I’ve spoken asking me which of my products, a book or cd, is best for reaching a teenager.

It works like this.

Get a great motivational or personal development audio CD or cassette you can play in your car and plan an excuse for taking your teen on a fairly long car ride. I highly recommend one that is funny, fast paced, and preferable uses stories instead of formal boring facts.

Pop in the tape – and don’t say a thing. Wait until they ask a question or make a comment, and immediately stop the recording and engage them.

When that is over – start the recording again.

Repeat as much as you can and be amazed at the kind of conversations that can get started.

Teenagers constantly report that the number one reason communication is so bad with their folks (their perception) is that parent’s don’t listen and don’t take the time. This solves both of these problems.

4. Have A Little Patience

Up until the end of World War II, teenagers weren’t even identified as a group with unique challenges and needs.

You were just a kid until you were a young man or woman.

Today teens are a social, financial, and political market segment. They are pounded with commercial advertising, temptations unheard of even a few years ago.

Handicapped by self-absorbed ex-hippie parents and whipped into a sexual frenzy by fashion and videos, we can say with conviction that being a teenager is harder today than ever before.

So, have some patience and cut your kids some slack, what were you doing at a comparable age, and what did your parents think about your choices then?

Remember that the mighty oak was once a nut like you!
