Are There Dangerous Parabens In Your Skin Creams? Separating Fact From Fiction

Author:  |  Category: Dentist

By Dr. Valerie Rosenbaum

The debate over the dangers of parabens in skincare products and other health and beauty aids is a heated one. If you ask one side, ‘Are parabens bad?’ Their answer will be no. The other side will say, ‘Yes’. Here’s a look at both sides of the story.

Safe Preservatives or Not?

The pro-paraben side of the debate point out the long history of safe use, the effectiveness as preservatives and the low cost. The opposing view is that long term history of safe use is questionable.

One of the dangers of parabens has always been allergic reaction. They and other artificial preservatives are the most common cause of allergic reactions. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, then, yes is the answer to are parabens bad.

Organizations that adhere to the ‘precautionary principle’ object to the everyday use of these preservatives and to the variety of different products, including food, that contain them. The precautionary principle puts the burden of proof on the pro-paraben side. They need to prove that the chemicals will NOT cause harm. The pro-paraben group believes that they should be proven undoubtedly harmful, before they will stop using them in their products.

Are parabens bad preservatives? There is no doubt that a paraben can prolong the shelf-life of a product, but other safer options exist, especially when it comes to caring for the skin. Natural vitamin E is a safe and effective preservative that is also an antioxidant and beneficial for the skin’s health.

That leaves only cost. It is true that a synthetic paraben is less expensive than naturally occurring vitamin E, but if cosmetic companies would cut into their advertising budget, just a little, they could avoid passing the expense on to their customers.

What Are the Believed Dangers of Parabens?

It depends on which one you are talking about. They are a group of synthetic chemicals that are combined with specific types of alcohol. The type of alcohol is immediately precedes the word ‘paraben’ on an ingredients label. When it comes to methyl-parabens, they are known to cause itching, burning, scaling, hives and blistering of the skin.

Are parabens bad for your health? They imitate estrogen activity. Women who have endometriosis are advised to avoid products that contain them. People in general are likely to be exposed to too many different estrogen imitators and they may increase our risk of cancer.

Sodium methyl-paraben has been banned by the EU because of the dangers of parabens combined with sodium include de-pigmentation of the skin. If yes is the answer to are parabens bad, what can you do.

There are safe and effective alternatives like natural vitamin E and grape seed extract. When those cannot be found, you simply have to avoid them whenever possible. We are exposed to a lot of carcinogens on a daily basis. That is probably one of the dangers of parabens. When added to all of the other carcinogens in our environment, it’s a miracle that everyone doesn’t develop it.

Ban on YouTube spreads to Google services in Turkey

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Monday, June 7, 2010

Access to search engine Google has been limited and most of Google’s online services cannot be accessed in Turkey. The access limitation happened due to the blocking of an IP set that belongs to Google. These IP addresses were shared between YouTube and other Google services.

The Turkish news site Hürriyet Daily News reports that Turkey’s Telecommunications Communication Presidency (TCP) (a government agency that manages Turkish ISPs) indefinitely shut off access to several Google services. The shut-off came after the banning of YouTube for alleged insults against Turkish Republic founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. TCP released an official statement Friday, saying it had blocked access to some Google IP addresses “because of legal reasons”. Under Turkish law, it is an offence to “insult Turkishness.”

Softpedia states that the limited access to Google could be a result of the government trying to block specific DNS addresses that relate to Google, as part of its ongoing attempts to block YouTube. Since Google services share common software and IP addresses, the search engine itself suffers from access restrictions. Turkish citizens are concerned that this move of the governmental agency was another step towards a complete ban on Google, as exists in China.

Several Internet sites have been banned in Turkey in recent years, and although some of them were subsequently unbanned, most of them remain inaccessible. Engelli Web, a website listing banned sites reports that currently YouTube (since May 2008), Last.fm (since June 26, 2009), and Spanish newspaper El Mundo (since May 14, 2010) are among the banned sites in Turkey. MySpace and WordPress were also among banned sites for a period of time. Websites will be blocked following a court decision or if TCP decides to block on its behalf.

RetweetToday reports that Turkish citizens on Twitter have also reported access problems. Comments about the blockage are being shared using hashtags such as TurkeyCensorGoogle and TurkeyGoogleBan, as well as NoGoogleNoWeb.

A new study has found that people storing extra fat around their waist have a strongly increased chance of early death, even if their overall weight is average. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine today, found that for each addition 5 cm on the waist, the chance of early death is increased by between 13% and 17%.

In the study, 360,000 people from across nine countries in Europe were surveyed.

One of the study’s authors, Professor Elio Riboli of Imperial College London, commented on the findings. “We were surprised to see the waist size having such a powerful effect on people’s health and premature death,” he stated.

The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, has today lifted its ban on unusually shaped fruits and vegetables, in what the EU’s agriculture commissioner has called “a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot”.

The regulation has previously been criticized as an example of the EU’s bureaucracy by critics of the organisation.

The products affected by the deregulation are apricots, artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, avocadoes, beans, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, courgettes, cucumbers, cultivated mushrooms, garlic, hazelnuts in shell, headed cabbage, leeks, melons, onions, peas, plums, ribbed celery, spinach, walnuts in shell, water melons and witloof/chicory.

Recent anonymous press briefings by US State Department officials indicated that its arms control division may punish Blackwater Worldwide for improper paperwork.

The Directorate of Defense Trade Controls has the power to fine or agree voluntary penalties with exporters of certain weapons, who do not follow correct procedures. Blackwater Worldwide, a private military company, exported automatic weapons to Iraq that became the subject of a federal investigation first disclosed in 2007.Concern was expressed by the unnamed officials that paperwork errors may make the weapons untraceable, and that some reached Iraq’s black market.

Airbus announces job cuts of 10,000

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 28, 2007

Airbus, Europe‘s biggest aircraft manufacturer, has announced 10,000 job cuts over the next four years. The news comes as its parent company, EADS starts a major restructuring programme because the company is not efficient enough.

Louis Gallois, the Airbus chief executive, said the company expects to cut approximately 4,300 jobs in France, 3,700 in Germany, 1,600 in UK and 400 in Spain. About half of those cuts will be made among subcontractors and temporary workers. Actual Airbus employee reduction would be about 5,000, or 9% of the total European work force of 55,000 full-time Airbus employees.

Although Gallois said he hoped to achieve this mainly through attrition, the unions were displeased. Union officials said nearly 14,000 employees at four French sites had a two hour work stoppage Wednesday afternoon to protest the cuts.

“The response has been massive,” said Julien Talavan, a spokesman for Force Ouvrière, the main Airbus union in France. “This is just the beginning,” he said, hinting at future labor action.

This move comes after well-publicized delays on its A380 super-jumbo commercial airliner. The restructuring announcement also includes the proposed sale or closure of 3 plants.
